Most Cyprus tax work is done by accountants and tax advisors, not lawyers. You want a tax lawyer for the legal end of it: an objection or appeal against a Tax Department assessment, a ruling request, the tax terms of a transaction, or a structure that has to survive substance and anti-abuse scrutiny. Our directory lists 72 Cyprus law firms whose service areas include corporate tax or VAT, shown with their Google rating where we have one, alongside our separate list of tax advisors.
Firms in this area
We list 72 firms whose service areas include this work. The 24 shown below are ordered by Google rating. We do not hold review counts, so a high rating here may rest on very few reviews, and a Google rating measures what past clients chose to post rather than the quality of the legal work. Treat the order as a starting point, not a ranking.

How this list is built
We classify each firm's service areas ourselves, from its public website and listing information. Those tags are our classification, not a Bar Association specialisation certificate, and a firm may well take work outside them. Where we show a rating it is the firm's Google rating at our last data refresh, a few listings have none, we do not hold review counts, and no firm pays for placement. Before you instruct anyone, you can check them independently: a Cyprus law firm can only be incorporated with the approval of the Legal Council, and every practising advocate is entered on the Cyprus Bar Association Register of Practising Advocates and holds an annual licence. Ask for the registration details and verify them.
Tax lawyer or tax advisor: which one you need
A tax advisor or an ICPAC accountant handles registration, returns, VAT filings and planning, and that covers the great majority of Cyprus companies. A tax lawyer earns the fee where the question is legal rather than arithmetic: challenging an assessment, arguing the interpretation of a provision, documenting a structure so it holds up against anti-abuse rules, or handling the tax clauses in a share or asset sale. If you are choosing between the two on price alone, you probably need the advisor.
The 2026 numbers your adviser should be using
Corporation tax is 15 percent from 1 January 2026, up from 12.5 percent. The Special Defence Contribution on dividends fell from 17 to 5 percent, though the older 17 percent rate can still apply to distributions out of profits earned up to 31 December 2025, so which profit year a dividend comes from is a real question rather than a technicality. Deemed dividend distribution was abolished for profits generated from 1 January 2026 onward, and stamp duty was repealed in full. The IP Box remains, with an effective rate of roughly 3 percent on qualifying intellectual property income. Any advice that still opens with a 12.5 percent corporation tax rate predates the reform.
Substance is the thing that gets tested
The structures that fail scrutiny are the ones with no real activity behind them. Directors who never meet in Cyprus, no local decision making, no employees and no premises make a residency claim hard to defend. A good tax lawyer builds the substance and the evidence trail at the same time as the structure, rather than assembling it after a query lands.
5 questions to ask before you instruct
- Are you advising on the legal position, or filing compliance? Who does the other half?
- Have you argued an objection or appeal before the Tax Department for a case like mine?
- Will you put the analysis in writing, and does it reference the enacted 2026 provisions?
- What substance would this structure need to survive a challenge, in concrete terms?
- How do you split one-off advisory fees from any ongoing work?
How the fees usually work
How Cyprus law firms usually bill tax work. Indicative market structure, not quotes from the firms listed. Always ask for a written estimate before instructing.| Matter | How it is usually billed | What drives the cost |
|---|
| Written tax opinion | Fixed fee or capped hourly | Number of jurisdictions, novelty of the point, how much diligence is needed |
| Objection or appeal | Hourly, with an estimate per stage | Amount assessed, volume of documents, whether it escalates beyond the Tax Department |
| Transaction tax clauses | Part of the deal fee | Deal size, warranty and indemnity negotiation |
| Ruling request | Fixed fee | Complexity of the facts and the drafting required |
Red flags to avoid
- A pitch that leads with "Cyprus is zero tax" instead of your actual residency and domicile position.
- Corporation tax quoted at 12.5 percent, or 5 percent applied to a distribution of pre-2026 profits without first checking which profit year it comes from.
- A structure with no substance plan attached to it.
- Advice given verbally only, with nothing in writing you could rely on later.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a tax lawyer or a tax advisor in Cyprus?
A tax advisor or ICPAC accountant covers registration, returns, VAT and planning, which is what most companies need. A tax lawyer is for the legal end: objections and appeals, rulings, the tax terms of a transaction, and structures that must withstand anti-abuse scrutiny.
Can a Cyprus lawyer handle a dispute with the Tax Department?
Yes. Registered advocates can act on objections and appeals and represent you in proceedings. Ask specifically whether the firm has run cases at your stage and value, since routine compliance experience is not the same thing.
Does the lower 5 percent rate on dividends apply to older profits?
Not automatically. The Special Defence Contribution on dividends was cut from 17 to 5 percent in the 2026 reform, but the older 17 percent rate can still apply where the dividend is paid out of profits earned up to 31 December 2025. Which profit year a distribution comes from can change the tax materially, so have it checked before you declare.
