Registering a vessel under the Cyprus flag involves ownership eligibility, the choice between provisional, permanent, parallel-in and parallel-out registration, mortgages recorded against the vessel, and the corporate vehicle that owns her. A shipping lawyer handles that alongside the Shipping Deputy Ministry rather than treating it as a filing exercise.
Tonnage tax and why the structure has to match it
Cyprus operates a tonnage tax regime under which tax is calculated on vessel tonnage instead of on profit. It is compulsory for owners of Cyprus-flag vessels and optional, on election, for owners of foreign-flag vessels, charterers and ship managers who meet the qualifying conditions. The regime has been approved by the European Commission through to the end of 2029. Because eligibility turns on the activity and on how the entity is set up, the corporate structure and the tax position have to be designed together rather than in sequence.
